World of Dockets

Obviously many of us do not have an abundance of free time on our hands. Most of us have to work for a living and during the few moments we actually do have some free time, we want to relax. Nothing can eat up our moments of leisure like having to go to court, whether it is because of a traffic incident, civil dispute, or criminal activity. Checking a court docket for your local court can be a very good way to save yourself that valuable free time that we all covet. Dockets are available for the public so that they can see what hearings have been scheduled in a court and when. If you ever get a chance to choose the day you visit court, make sure to check a court docket to see when both the court and yourself are available. Checking dockets will give you assurance that nobody is pulling a fast one over on you and misrepresenting their times of availability. Here are some Do’s and Dont’s for browsing through a court docket. You may never have thought about it, but dockets can be a useful tool.

DO check a court docket to make sure you have the correct date for your hearing. Nothing looks worse than showing up late or not showing up at all. You do not want to get on a judge’s bad side, ever. The dockets are there so that these misunderstandings do not occur. If the court date you received and the date for your hearing in the court docket do not match, contact the court to see what is happening. These dockets will minimize any possible confusion, which is a good thing for you and the court itself.

DO look through a court docket if you have never seen our legal system in process. It can be a memorable experience and will expose you to something new. Go through the dockets and find a case or hearing that looks interesting to you. Once you find something on the court docket, and you find out if the hearing is open to the public, go ahead and go there to check it out. Even if there is no hearing on the dockets that are open to the public, it might be fun to go down to your local courthouse to have a look around.

DO NOT use a court docket to look for people you know. Having to go to court can be embarrassing and frustrating for many of us. Nobody needs someone using the public dockets to come and harass them during a difficult time. If you do this, not only will you probably be making an enemy for life, you may be getting into some trouble yourself. A court docket is for public use and many people can use them to see a case they have some interest in, but the dockets are not there for stalking purposes.

Go online and look at a court docket. Dockets are there for you to view.

A court docket is a record that contains basic information about a court case. The court docket typically includes the number of the case or docket, along with information regarding the court, attorney, judge, etc. Court dockets may also include a summary of court documents and other pertinent case events.

Online websites and databases have the large majority of court dockets on record. There is a system named “PACER” that maintains records for all federal court cases, yet it does not have its own website. A simple and quick search on the Internet may procure a few websites that offer access to dockets. State and county dockets are tougher to get your hands on, but not impossible.

It may be on your mind to find a county court docket to be able to review the records of the case or keep the records for future reference. For some, obtaining a copy of a county court docket might seem like a daunting task at first glance. Where do you start looking? What are some things that you should be looking for? How can you find a docket search to obtain a docket for your own records or review? Fortunately, there are court docket searches that have access to all types of dockets, whether it be at a federal, state, or county level.

You can follow these steps and advice to make your search a stress-free one:

1. Find your case/docket number

All county docket searches will require you to enter your case/docket number, along with some sort of verification to obtain a court docket. Prepare this number and relevant identification before you make your search.

2. Open a search engine and find a county docket search website.

Use Google to find the website that has access to your county docket. Some websites will charge you a fee, but there is likely a free docket search that has records of the county court you are looking for. As there are a large number of docket searches, be as specific as you can in your search query.

3. Browse to find the right county docket section and enter your case/docket number.

There will be differentiation between Supreme Court, federal, state, and local court dockets. Find the section for your county and enter your case number. If there are any additional verification requirements, complete them. You should be able to obtain the county docket you were looking for!

4. Store the county docket that you have just obtained.

You should keep the county docket in your files for future reference. There may be pertinent information there in the future!

tips:

- You may be able to find your local county’s docket database through a direct Google search. There are many counties around the nation that offer local county docket databases specific to their county.
- Federal and Supreme Court dockets are considered a branch of public records. Internet searches for your county’s dockets should be quick and painless.

The definition of a court clerk is pretty much self explanatory. The duties of a court clerk mainly sticks to those that are require clerical attention. The purpose of a court clerk is to be responsible for keeping organized the records of the court in which they work for and to maintain its’ records especially its court cases. A court clerk is also known as a ‘clerk of the court.’ This name could fluctuate by being more individualized by the type of court you work for.

It is a given that a court clerk will be required to sustain all clerical responsibilities in the assigned court. These clerical responsibilities will vaguely include keeping track of all of the court cases which have occurred. As well as keeping track of these court cases; the time and date in which each of these court cases took place should be recorded and saved as well. The court clerk is also usually required to be sort of like a wingman to the judges in that specific court. They should be keeping all judges up to date and well informed of everything that is going with the court cases. Some court cases will require the court clerk to notify and try to get in touch with any witness or litigant to try to get them to share their witness for the court cases. Along with getting in touch with these people for the court cases, some court clerks are given the privilege to distribute the people having to take oath before taking part in court cases when they appear in court.

Some of the states even allow the court clerk to become much more involved than only distributing the oaths for court cases as they are allowed to even officiate civil unions and weddings. As with many other occupations in the United States, your salary will also increase as a court clerk depending on the length of your experience. The starting salaries of a court clerk are namely on the low side. Due to this factor there are some courts that are without a court clerk as of today. Court cases can be handled without a court clerk but it is most helpful if at least one is available. If the court cases happen to need a court clerk as soon as possible the judge may have to assume the responsibilities of one. A court that handles many probate court cases usually lacks in helping hands including having a court clerk. Now as the type of court cases at the court increases in importance, your job will become that much more important. The more important the court cases you assist with, the more your salary will be. Some court clerks have high salaries based on the state they are in as well. Salaries in some states can go well over a hundred thousand a year.

On top of experience, court clerks should also have a solid foundation of a good education. Depending on the court cases they handle, they will need to be knowledgeable. A couple of the most popular states for a court clerk occupation are California, Florida, and Texas.

Most cases or hearings taking place in a courtroom are then placed into public records. Public court records are held onto for a variety of reasons, and can be very informative if you have any interest in law, or a great resource in case you need information. Thousands of people are going through the legal system every day and it is important that we keep public records so that we can call upon cases from the past to make decisions in a fair manner. Here are some reasons why you might want to check some public court records out for yourself.

1. Research – If you are a law student now or you plan on being one in the future, it is important to check public court records to learn about famous cases from the past. Familiarity with public court records will show people that you know what you are talking about. If you are a law student, it is very likely that you are checking public records regularly for coursework anyway, and if you’re not, you might want to start immediately.

2. Court cases – Attorneys check public court records very frequently. Going through public records will let you know if there is a precedent for the case you are working on. Calling upon a precedent will give the attorney an edge, since there are public records of the same case already being ruled a certain way. Not checking public court records can cause an attorney to miss a big opportunity in their case.

3. Criminals – Whether you are an employer looking to hire a new employee or something about your new neighbor rubs you the wrong way, checking public court records can give you valuable information about people that you fear might be criminals. There are plenty of people walking the streets that have been accused or convicted of horrible crimes. By checking public records, you can be saving yourself from a miserable situation.

4. Protecting children – The world is not as safe of a place as it used to be. Watching your local news channel can make you feel as though there are predators all around. Checking public records is important so you know if there are any predators nearby for the sake of your children and checking public court records could help your pursuit. These public records will let you know if there has been anyone in your neighborhood that has been convicted of abusing children in the past. Having this knowledge can directly impact the safety of your children.

There are several other reasons why researching public court records can be beneficial to you. Public records are used all over the country to further people’s knowledge bases as well as for safety issues. It might be a mistake to not check public court records when your situation calls for it. Public records exist so they can be accessed by the public, after all. You can even do it from your home, on your computer.

It is always interesting to see what is going on at your local court. If you check a court calendar, also known as court dockets, you can find out more about the cases or hearings that happen to be in your area. Court dockets are a part of public records, so its absolutely free to check a court calendar to see what hearings you may find interesting. There are a few reasons why you might want to check court dockets, so here are some laid out in case you have some interest in this area. You never know, you might actually want to become a part of the judicial system yourself some day.
